What is the minimum legal working age in the US?

I see so many questions on Banswer.com s from 14 year olds wanting to know about getting a job and what to put on an application. Here in UK it is illegal for anybody under 16 to be working at a conventional job (supermarket, boutique, factory, fast food joint etc.) because of child welfare legislation. So are 14/15 year olds in US really allowed to be formally employed in ordinary jobs?

Answers:
Here in the US, if anyone is under eighteen he or she would have to work with a work permit. There is a restriction on the number of hours they can work if they are under eighteen. When they are eighteen, however, they're considered adults and can work whatever hours they please.
Yes. There are restrictions on how many hours they can work, how many and how often they get breaks and in many states how late they can work on a school night! They tend to get rather low status jobs (bagger in grocery store, bus person in restaurants etc.) I have had some sort of job myself since I was 14 (1st job-dishwasher in old folks home) but I was raised on a farm and thought ANYTHING was better than farm work (if I had a "job" there was less time for chores--plus I got PAID!)Didn't hurt me any. Good luck!
