Not really. Employers want references regarding your work ethic, something a fellow employee cannot answer. Go ahead and use your previous supervisors, they have your records and can look you up, even if you haven't stayed in touch.

Generally, put "Available on Request" in the References portion of your resume. That way your friend's information is not available to them unless they are interested in you. Most companies expect it.
As for employment references, those are manditory, so you do have to list them.
yes it is possible, but i would try to tell them what other working experiences you have had, even if it was not an actually job. Example(you worked for your dad over the summer, or you did service hours for the community)

To be be perfectly honest it is not really advisible to use a co-worker as a business reference. Employers want references from applicants that are supervisors, those who the employee reported to, not someone on their level.
If you provide at least two supervisory references and one "character' reference maybe you'll be ok. A character reference could be another employee on your level but don't use only character references - just not advisible.
Why not use former teachers? That is definately another solution - a teacher could say how punctual you were for class etc. teachers are in a position of authority...
