I need to know what a Pennsylvania corrections activities specialist does in a course of a work day.?

I am appling for a PA Civil Service job. I know I will be working in a prison if I get the job. I want to know how much contact I will have with the inmates, what type of arts and crafts they are provided with, how much paper work I will have to complete, and what are the hours and days for a shift. Any help will be appreciated.

Answer:
Maybe you should write to the warden of the local prison, for details.
maybe you could call one of the prisons that the job is located at, for information on this position.
I am a case manager in Indiana which is probably about the same as a CAS in Pennsylvania. It sounds like your job will be the same as a rec leader. most likely you will be around offenders constantly. Paperwork wise, there is always some, if its not on paper, it didn't happen. Paperwork is actually your friend. Document everything you do, you will appreciate it when , not if, you end up in court. A big part of the arts and crafts will be making sure they are not making weapons out of them. we had an offender make a pretty nice bat out of ice cream sticks. The biggest challenge you will have is the offenders attempting to manipulating you. They will attempt to be your friend and will try to create sexual situations around you. if that does not work, they will attempt to intimidate you. Its a bluff. they are all cowards! This is after 10 years of correctional experience. call their bluffs and they will respect you. good luck.
Sounds to me like you'll have an office in or near the institution's inmate Gym, where you'll manage the prison's recreation equipment, make recommendations on equipment purchases based on lowest price found to the warden for consideration.

You'll also oversee inmate activity in their "hobby-craft" areas, where they work with safety approved leather and wood craft tools. Being a steady source of income for inmates, you'll be impressed how quickly they acquire skills in leather and/or wood works. You'll be in charge of assigning or removing inmates from such hobbycraft privileges.

And you'll likely have ability to approve or deny inmates attending recreational sports events done on select areas of the prison facility as well.

You very likely will be in close contact with inmates on a daily basis too. Office hours are likely "flex" to a 9 to 5 standard.
