How do I get a job in HR?

I have a BS degree from Northern Illinois University in business management/HR. I graduated in 2005. I live in the Chicago area. I do have a little experience in the HR field, but when I looked at open positions on job boards or company websites, I started to notice that most firms only hire people who already posess at least 2 years of experience or more. I haven't stopped looking since I graduated. Why are these businesses, big or small, not willing to take a chance on someone like me or countless other people in my situation? I have the knowledge, but it seems like the companies don't even notice. Sometimes I wonder if just starting at the bottom in some company would have taken me to a better place that I am at now. Any advice?

Answer:
Monster , Yahoo Hotjobs, Careerbuilder are some of the largest job boards, where you can apply for jobs and upload your resume. Since Craigslist, allows free job postings, many smaller companies post their vacancies on this online classifieds website. You can also search for jobs from multiple websites using aggregators like SimplyHired and Indeed. Referrals are also becoming a increasingly popular way to get hired.

look for an office manager position or some other position where you can assist the current HR Director. That way you can get the experience you need to be the Director in a couple of years.
Are you interested in grad school? There are plenty of HR type related programs. I just finished my masters in industrial organizational psychology, which isn't exactly HR, but most of us with that degree do go into HR.
Contact your University and see if they help with placement. Network with those you know: family, friends, neighbors, people with similar hobbies and those who attended classes with you. Ask them if they know of an opening or if there is someone you should contact. Keep track of all recommendations and follow up on them. Let your contacts know the end result.

Go to professional meetings and meet people in the business world. There should be a SHRM chapter near you; check shrm.org. Also look at ourhrsite.com even though it isn't in your local area as there are a lot of pertinent links.

Good luck!
