Answers:
Look good. Introduce yourself, then begin by explaining what you can offer - something unique or something that will save them money. These are the 5 selling steps you have to remember.
A - Get attention.
I - Arouse interest.
D - Create desire for the product or service.
A - Ask for the order
Attend a sales course or buy a sales book. They are not very expensive.

Peace and blessings!
Yes. Ask how the customer is doing today.
double your price estimates, then tell businesses that you can save them 50%.

also, tell them you are reputable in the community, possibly making up testimonials by other customers - especially any big or popular places you have done
Don't pitch. Read up on "Needs Analysis Selling" or "Investigative Selling". That is honed at asking the customers questions, THEN selling to them based on their needs.
Read: The Little Red Book of Selling by John Ditomer.

Awesome easy read and a unique approach to the art of sales.

Consumer's hate sale pitches; especially over the phone. You've got to be extremely authentic in why anyone would by your product or your service. In other word's you've got to believe in what your'e selling; otherwise your targeted consumer will smell your "just for a buck" mentality like a drop of blood in a shark infested ocean.

You need a purpose statement. Make it clear that you are going to ask some questions and set the stage for the close:

Something like, "My purpose for coming to see you today is to ask you a few questions to see if you are a fit for our services. We'll know in the next 10 or 15 minutes whether this is the case after which time we'll move forward or I'll get out of your hair. Fair enough? (nod head--get them nodding!)"

Maybe not so casual--choose your own style.
I second Zeebaris

Don`t pitch! Let people know you are interested in them and are offering practical help. Even if they know you are selling a service, they would prefer to buy from a friend. Be genuinely friendly and get to know your customers and their needs.
A website is a great way to get local customers as well as a broader market. I know of a guy who is in the tarmac (apsalt) business. His business was at a dead end, but after he built a successful website his business grew and now he sits on the beach most of the time.
If you want to read his story give me a line.
