Advice from any pharmacy technicians out there.?

I'm seeking information on how to become a pharmacy technician. Are you certified? How did you get certified? Did you find a company to hire you entry-level with no certification? Anything I should know or consider? I'm considering a career change, but don't wish to fall for any scams.such as unnecessary schools, certifications, etc. Haven't found a whole lot of useful, detailed information available on the internet. Thanks!!

Answer:
You take an exam, the PTCE, for certification. To become licensed, you just need to be a high school graduate, you do not need to be certified.
There is not a huge, outstanding demand for pharmacy techs. They are always vulnerable to technology improvement. You don't make much. The highest pharmacy tech salary I have ever heard of is $13/hr, and average is around $10/hr. Walgreens really has not change their pharmacy tech salary for several years. Most companies will not care if you are certified or not at hire. You will make more money if you are certified, though.

Visit the national board at www.ptcb.com they will have plenty of info for you there including the test you have to pass to become certified. Also some states require that techs register within that state also. The Pharmacy practice is a lot harder then most people let on and nationally their is a shortage of both pharmacist and pharmacy techs so there is always work. My advice would be to go speak with your local pharmacist and ask him questions he should be able to steer you in the right direction.
