Has anyone else used that stupid "Work Number" service?

I've never really created a real resume, but this new job I applied for said it was mandatory. I thought I was screwed because I usually just guess what month and year I was hired and when I left. Then, this friend of mine told me to call The Work Number. I did, and they sent me through a whole lot of automated bs. Then it finally asks me to enter my SSN. I do, and it tells me to hold for the next service representitive. When they finally answer, the girl asks me to verify my name, SSN, address, job title, and HOW LONG I WORKED THERE!! I said, "YOU DUMBASS, that's the reason I'm calling, because I DON'T KNOW EXACT DATES!" She began acting very stuck up and said, "Well I must refer you to this other place, but I don't have the number because I'm such an idiot who gets paid $5 an hour to sit at a phone by myself because I'm such a loser and I'm to ugly to be a stripper, which is fine because I have no friends anyway." So I hung up on her. What do I do now?

Answer:
The work number was created to verify who you are at the current place you are working. I have called and I think it is quite a joke myself. They ask the usual, your name, social, where you work, your position and how much you make. You then take the code they give you and give it to another prospective employer or it also can be used for credit related issues, such as a loan application. The person on the other end really does not know much more than you tell them. To me they're just playing middle man. You could tell them anything you wanted and it would be relayed to the other party. My advise to you is to guesstimate when you started your job, call back the work number and give them that date and be sure to put that exact date on your resume. When the prospective employer calls to verify he/she will be given the exact same information as you give to the operator at the work number. Good luck!

You can contact your previous employers and ask them to verify your dates of employment
1) Pray that you did not just giver your SSN to someone who steals identities.
2) Check your paystubs from your previous jobs -- assuming you keep those. The first one from a job tells you the first date of the pay period you are being paid for and the last one from the same job will tell you the last day of the pay period you were paid for. This is assuming you keep your pay stubs.
3) Call the HR departments of your previous employers and ask them when you started and when you ended your employment with them.
4) Get a copy of your credit report.
you could have done it online. but watch out there is a site that is almost identical, i think it's fake. www.theworknumber.com NOT www.worknumber.com . Same thing happened to me, i got hired at Bank of America and i screwed up the date on my employment verifcation form and they said that they cant hire me anymore. whatever fcuk bank of america.
move on. Life has it's challenges This is just one of them.
Unless you are going for a high powered IBM type job, approximate dates are fine. If you sell yourself well enough, your resume will quickly become part of the circular file in the HR dept.
I hope you didnt give your SS number to the dingbat on the phone--that kinda sounds like a scam--
