Can a company cancel my layaway before the 30 days they gave me?

My employer cancelled my layaway after they terminated my employment I did not approve but it was cancelled any way before the thirty days were up, I had already had payed 40% of the layaway I am leaning towards a lawsuit but need something stable to ground it on any help is appreciated. p.s.s. I reside in Indiana but was employed in Illinois

That would be a contract and if you fulfilled your end of it, they at least would have to return the money you paid in.
Otherwise you can take them to small claims court (no lawyers).
A company can cancel your layaway, having the same rights as the customer has in this type of transaction.

They do owe you your deposit back. You can sue them in small claims court for your money ONLY after they have refused your demand letter for that refund. You should give them two weeks to refund your payment.

It is unlikely that they will be so petty as to hold your funds until served the suit.

Unless you were terminated for a "protected" reason, such as age, sexual harassment or race reasons, you have no other grounds for a suit. A public record of a lawsuit may diminish your career chances, so be certain such action is worth the risk.
