What are the advantages for companies to hire interen, rather than hireing full-time eimployees?
Answer:
I might be an "odd man out" for thinking this way, but I don't care for interns. Why should they "sneak" in to a position, while someone from the street has to bust their * applying and interviewing for the same position that the interns eventually fill? I'm one of those people who had to bust their *, plunged into the workforce after college, no internships, went to several unsuccessful interviews, and started from the bottom, the tough, old fashioned way.
But, that's my opinion, what do I know?
Interns are typically hired to save companies money. The interns we have typically don't do very skilled tasks. Usually the interns we have check numbers, run our automated reports, and do the piddly things no one else wants to/has time to do. The internship program my company has is also used to "scout" talents. If we have an intern who is great at what he/she does they are offered a permanent position.
Interns in other industries/companies could be a great resource for new, fresh, cutting edge ideas as well.
Depends on the company. At my company, we hire (and usually pay) interns that are college students with an obvious match between their major and and our business. If the intern does well with the work we ask them to do, we may want to hire them permanent when they graduate. The work they do while working as an intern gives them experience, yes, but it's also work that others on the team don't have time for. It gives someone on the team an opportunity to be a "lead" on the small project and to try out being a supervisor.
