Merchant navy?

I'm interested in doing a degree in Merchant Ship Operations. Do I just do the degree at university and then apply to a shipping company after completion for a job? Or do I have to be sponsored by them first?

Before embarking on any vocational course you need to consider the job opportunities. The British merchant fleet is very small and in my view likely to get smaller. This means that that career prospects are less than attractive. You may well end up with a Masters certificate but serving as a third officer. Then of course there is the prospect of being away you family for many weeks at a time. Go to Felixstowe and some of the other big ports see how many ships you can spot that are registered in Britain. There are some foreign shipping companies that officered their ships British personnel. In your place I would contact the shipping companies before embarking on the course.Personally I would be looking at a shore-based profession.
