Do you think minimum wage should be increased?
The Republican majority in congress is firmly set against it.
At the same time, THEIR income as congressmen has increased by over 27,000 dollars per year as a "cost of living adjustment".
How is this the will of the people?
Answer:
It's not the will of the people; it's the will of Republicans. Yes, it should be increased. Here in Alabama, while our "cost of living" is low, minimum wage is about $5.45/hour. I want you to look a parent in the eye who's working at the local drive-thru & tell them that they are supposed to get $5.45/hour & feed & clothe their kids.
it IS increasing this fall in Michigan
I agree with ya minimum wages should be increased AHHHHHHHHHH
In general I think it needs to be increased.
Absolutely, it should be increased. It is not the will of the people that is done. The rich get richer.
Minimum wage could be raised, but from an economic point of view, this could lead businesses to hire less people because they have to pay them more. California, however, has just agreed to raised the state minimum wage to what is now the highest in the country. It should be considered nationally.
heck no , get a better job if you dont like the pay
yep it shiould increase
Yes I strongly believe that min. wage should increase. Everything esle has so why shouldnt min. wage increase too.. I also think that servers who are getting paid by their company below min, wage shoud get their bump too. Most states servers or anyone who works and receives tips they make 2.13 per hour (because they make min. with their tips) is utter bs. The only one who makes money in that industry is the corporation itself. Now that I vented thank you for that question,
as much as i feel for someone who actually earns the minimum wage, i think if it is not enough money for them, they can get a job someplace else.
the only reason i don't think it should be raised is because of the elderly on social security. their checks won't be increased, but prices of everything will.
as far as the republicans and all of their raises, it's not fair, but when it comes to them, what else is new?
In California it looks like it will be raised to $8. That means all prices will go up. I heard a restaurant owner stating that he paid waiters minimum wage and with tips they make about $28/hr. When the minimum wage goes up he will have to raise all prices. Don't forget that when the minimum wage goes up, employers social security matching goes up, workmans compensation costs go up.
You end up getting nowhere since all prices go up with the wages.
Nope, because then when you go buy a burger at Wendy's (or where ever) it will cost more. I think minimum wage is just fine for a teenager as there first job because most of them don't have too many bills. And if you want to get paid more then get a different job. Adults that are getting paid minimum wage are selling themselves short or are just lazy. And I agree with you about the congress "cost of living adjustment" stuff that's just BS.
I think it could use a little bump up, but keep in mind, a lot of states voluntarily pay more than the FEDERAL min wage, which is about $5.15? per hour. To my knowledge, a lot of states are paying about $7 or so for typical min wage jobs.
As for why it should not be raised too high, and should be kept in check, the economy would be directly affected by too high of a jump, as mentioned in other replies here, employers would cut back on labor to keep profit margins in-line, and shareholders/owners happy.
Also, most jobs that pay min wage, are not technical, and pardon the expression, but any "Joe" could fill the slot. Flipping burgers, frying chicken, greeting people, and pushing shopping carts doesn't require too many brain cells ;)
It also incites people to improve their education and/or seek better jobs, as mentioned here in other replies.
No I don't . Minimum wage is for entry level inexperienced workers typically high school age. I'm a high school career counselor and one of my responsibilities is to assist eligible students in getting part time employment. Most employers will pay them minimum wage for starters ($6.75). At 6.75 an hour if they work 15 hours a week they earn 101.25 before taxes. Let's say 25% of $101.25 is taxed their net = $75.94. I don't what wage level they're considering but let's say it was increased to $8 the increase would be about $20 gross. And after 25% in taxes the take home would be $90.00. So the increase would be $14.
However, we are still talking about entry level employment. I would not support increasing entry level because today $8 usually represents pay for someone who's had some experience (i.e., 6 mos minimum). And I don't see any value in going $7 or $7.75 again it's too close to $8. In today's economy $6.75 has become a good benchmark for entry level pay in the U.S. I don't see any justification for increasing the minimum wage.
That's my opinion .
