Being hung out to dry-at work?

Over the last few weeks, I have been watching the lab situation deteriorate. Here are the facts: I've submitted a number of reports to my boss which he never submits. His last major experiment failed (50% success), complained about doing a QC experiment, I have personally heard complaints from others regarding his teamwork skills. One week ago our VP resigned whom was my boss's major protectorate-anyone with too close association I have heard is in very real danger. One week ago I informed him of our VP's departure- a fact which he denied to his boss. When asked by his boss, I informed him that myself and another coworker contacted him to inform him of the resignation. My boss then called my and gave me some story about trust. Basically, I think I am being hung out to dry and this situation is getting extremely toxic. Tomorrow, I intend to talk to his boss and get the story as to what is happening. If I am not satisfied, I will be submitting my resume outside.

I don't get it. What's the big deal you and a co-worker advised this person the VP resigned? What does that have to do with trust? Regardless, it appears you have everything under control with what you are planning on saying regarding the work you have accomplished and plan on accomplishing.
Stay out of the politics as much as you can. My best advice to you is to do the best job that you can and document all of your work. You are in a complex scenario and it can only end up bad for you if you keep going around your immediate boss. The big bosses rarely fire the higher ups when they can quiet down a situation by firing a disgruntled employee.

Keep quiet, do an awesome job and don't go around your immediate boss too much. If anything, suggest to the top level bosses some great ideas and summarize some of your great experiments and leave it at that. They will figure out if something fishy is going on. And/or do some great write ups on your successful projects and leave them laying around.

If you are really concerned, submit your resume everywhere and get out. Always try to resolve the problem up front with your direct boss first. Just go in and ask "What's new." Let them vent, don't say too much and they will lead you down a path, hopefully to your benefit.

Good luck!
