My wife is a Chiropractor and just got her license in December. Her family chiropractor in KS asked her to be an associate Dr. in her clinic. We sold our home in MO, I quit my job, and we bought a house in KS for this job. The Dr. gave my wife a contract to review offering her a fixed salary for the first 6 months and then a % of her income after that. She was pregnant at the time, so she requested maternity leave be included in the contract. The Dr. offered 6 weeks of paid maternity leave, which was acceptable to us. So we were all in agreement to the contract, and the Dr. said she would have her lawyer make the maternity leave addition. She has never got it done, and always says the lawyer is not done with it. About a week before she was scheduled to go on maternity leave, the Dr. laid her off with no warning and no severance. The office has less than 15 employees and she worked there less than a year. Is there any violation here, and do we have a right to any compensation?

I don't know if KS is a "Right to Work" state. If so, then the employer doesn't need much of a reason to let go of an employee. To be sure, you will have to check with your local Department of Labor office. They should have the contact information for the Labor Law office. You will also want to call the Unemployment Insurance claims office to see if you qualify for benefits from MO.
If you can prove that he laid her off because she's pregnant, and you have pretty good evidence to prove it, you could take it to court. It's discrimination.
Otherwise, about all she can get is unemployment compensation.
That was dirty. I'd sure get a lawyer and check into this. Only problem is, with nothing in writing she may not have a leg to stand on. I wouldn't have gone to work without contracts signed and a copy in my pocket as I walked out the door. Sure hope you folks can nail the doctor on this one.
