Do you mean selection for a position? If so selection would depend upon the company. If it is one to five or ten people you may just walk in and get interviewed and hired if the company is hiring. Or if it is not you'll told that right now there is no opening. At a larger company you'll mail a resume and a cover letter saying you are sending a resume for a certain position. The resume will probably go to the personnel department which will distribute the resume to various departments if the company is hiring. Then if some department is hiring the personnel department will send you an appointment letter for an interview and so on. Otherwise you'll get a letter saying there is no opening at this time.
A few companies may never reply.
