What steps do I have to take to become a CPA?
Answer:
A degree in Accounting would help. Probably 2 years if you go to community college.
CPA and MBA are two different things so you don't need to be an MBA to be a CPA. You just take a test to be a CPA, but different states have different prerequisites to test. You can look up your state on the web page below.
In NY and PA you have to work for a public account firm for three years. This is basically slavery as they will under pay you and over work you. Unless you are right out of school it's better to get an MBA than a CPA.
You don't need an MBA to become a CPA. The following is from the CPA Califonia website:
The Basics
The two most important goals to focus on in your quest to become a CPA are passing the Uniform CPA Exam and meeting licensing requirements. California law gives CPA candidates multiple options for entering the profession, depending on the direction you’d like your career to take. The California Board of Accountancy has outlined two pathways for earning a CPA license:
Pathway 1
Pathway 1 is designed for individuals who will practice only in California and requires:
*
A bachelor’s degree;
*
24 semester units in accounting-related subjects;
*
24 semester units in business-related subjects, accounting courses beyond the 24 required units may apply toward the business units;
*
Passing the Uniform CPA Exam;
*
Two years of general accounting experience supervised by a licensed CPA; and
*
Passing an ethics course.
Pathway 2
Pathway 2 is similar to the licensing requirements of many other states. Therefore, if you are licensed under this pathway, the majority of other states will recognize your license. If you think that someday you might want to practice in another state, Pathway 2 may be able to provide you the professional mobility you desire. It requires:
*
A bachelor’s degree;
*
24 semester units in accounting-related subjects;
*
24 semester units in business-related subjects;
*
150 semester units (or 225 quarter units) of education;
*
Passing the Uniform CPA Exam;
*
One year of general accounting experience supervised by a licensed CPA; and
*
Passing an ethics course.
Once you pass the exam and apply for your CPA license, you’ll need to select one of the pathways.
There is a CPA body for each state in the US. Contact the CPA institute for your state for the relevant information. Note that the entrance requirements will be the same and your BS satisfies the initial criteria. Best of luck with the exams.
