A manager is a week past due on announcing an important promotion in a position that is currently empty.?

and MUCH needed. I was interviewed for this position on July 18 and was told a decision would be made and announced within 2 weeks. As yet there has been no decision made. This particular manager is on the District level and is not based in my location. I would like to ask about whether or not a decision has been made without being pesty. This manager tends to get very testy, especially when e-mail is involved, though that is the best and most efficient way to contact him and get a prompt reply. Any suggestion on how to ask him what is going on without being buggy?

Without knowing anything about the particular situation, it is hard to be specific. Having been in a position to hire, the only time I went over the deadline was when I didn't like any of the applicants. Maybe the position has been offered and the manager is waiting on a reply. We allow 3 days for a reply so people can discuss it with a spouse and consider the benefit package, since salaries are not quoted in the interview.
Also, this is vacation time, so someone may be out of the office, or there may be some other manager who needs to weigh in on the decision who likes a different applicant.
Did you send a thank you note as a followup to the interview?
Probably the best way at this point after 3 weeks is to send an email saying that you are still very interested in the postion, restate what is best about your qualifications, anything additional that you can bring to the job, and how happy you are to be working for the company, and thank the interviewer for his/her time. Ask when an announcement will be made, unless your company has a system for announcing all new managers. Don't let your email sound whiny.
