Answer:
Usually typed, its more professional. Start off with saying Dear Sir or Madame, I have known so and so for x amount of years, and during this time they have shown . (insert achievement or positive quality) and then why you personally would recomend them for whatever it is they need the referece for. Then hand sign it.
