Is it fair to hire someone on to a company based on looks? Need opinions?

the situation is, me and another girl had an oportunity to get into our web design department we work in telesales right now as temps , she had the first training day today, mine was suppose to be tommorow. We sit by eachother and when the web design leader came to get her they were flirting together. A little while later I got an email saying that they will not need me to help out because she will be helping them for the next 2 weeks and then I heard her talking to people by me on her break saying they might hire her and she was bragging about the guy flirting with her. They didn't even give me a chance. Do you think they should have given me a chance first, is this fair. Do I have to flirt to get a position? What are your thoughts?

Answer:
If that is how you get ahead at that company, you are better off not working there.

leason #1 it's not what you know it's what you do! Welcome to the world.
I don't think it's legal, I don't know; but the reality is that there's nothing you can do about it. Even if the practice is illegal (it's not "fair", but that means nothing), are you willing to take them to court? And how could you possibly prove your case, especially if the work isn't specialized and you were both qualified? In fact, if the position is sales, good looks and body might be a big factor in the hiring process - better looking people sell more (may not apply to telesales, obviously).

Regardless, this sounds like a chickensh*t outfit. Forget about it - move on. Find a place that can actually use what in your head, not on your chest.
Hmmmm, continue to work in telesales, and hone your craft. Remember, in this world, the salespeople are normally the highest paid individuals in any business. Anyway,

IF the only reason she got the position was for her flirting ability, I'm sure her web design skills (of lack thereof) will soon become apparent and she won't last long.

You know, If you think your creative and design skills are better, create a web site that will knock their socks off, and present it to them on a disk. You might be surprised that they come and SEEK you out reletivly quickly. OH, the upside of that: You could make them pay for their mistake by demanding a better compensation plan.
It's not fair, but few things in life are.

Don't worry, it won't be long before she figures out someway to sabatage her career there, it sounds like she's got a head start already.
