What suggestions should I give my company to propose that I be permitted to work from home ?
My job utilizes web based management tools so all I truly need is a lap top and DSL line (which I currently have at home) to complete my duties. I want to work from home 2-3 days per week. I have a daughter but she is away at school so I cannot use her as a reason. "
Answer:
Using a daughter or the need to take care of someone else is not a good reason. They want to know that you are working and not doing other stuff.
If you have a room set up as an office, let them know that and that this dedicted room is where you will be working. Also express your agreement that you'd like to try this out and will have monthly discussions with your manager to make sure they are happy with the work being done to be able to continue doing it.
If they agree with doing this then several other things need to be clearly defined. Who will be paying for phone calls, DSL, other related office supplies which you may need? Official start/finish times. If you can forward your office phone to your home phone, if you can or should be available to others through some IM while online.
In the company I work for, when a person telecommutes 3 days a week or more, they lose their office/cube and then need to use a 'hotel space' when they are in the office - meaning a generic cube setup that anyone can use when they are in the office. This gives the company something which they gain from the deal as well, Not having to pay for dedicated office space.
Perhaps you should suggest a 'gradual' telecommuting strategy.
Keep it ALL BUSINESS. The savings to the company. They wouldn't have to pay for a cube, for electric, for parking, for any amenities, and the worker would shoulder all that costs on their own.
Suggest a trial period of. 2 months where the worker works from home 1 day a week. If there is no loss of productivity, then it would be increased to 2 days a week. (the days would be a the choice of the employer.)
good luck
So because you chose to live that far from work, a job you obviouosly accepted after knowing the commute and do not want to get up early enough to BE ON TIME, you want to put that company out by making it nice and cozy for Lee. Never mind all the other working stiffs in the company who have to physically show up ON TIME. I see hundreds of people commute each day coming from as far as your distance is and they make the hustle. Your not enough disabled and your kid is away for christ's sake..WOW, very selfish and not fair. Don't forget to wear your seatbelt on that Monday morning drive. "swish" two points
ask them strainght up, be upfront about your situation, or do other work at home jobs, i use to have the same problem, and i had to work 12 hours a day,but when i found this great company, i quit, there's a great company that i work with, i work my own hours, and go to school full time, it works, its easy, call 1800-365-7550 ext 61583
