Accountin Internship: Public or Private?

I am graduating in May in accounting, recently attended a career fair at my school, and am interviewing with accounting firms and firms in industry. A fortune 500 company is interested in me as well as 2 other possible large companies to work as an intern in their finance/accounting department. I also have a lot of interest from a couple accounting firms, mainly a really nice looking small firm in a large city and a big four firm. Please accountants only, what would be your suggestion as the best way to begin my career, given your experience with this decision? Thank you

Answer:
In either case, you won't be doing anything great, but you will learn. Back in the old days, you needed direct audit experience to get your CPA, so I would tend to lean towards the public route, but if you aren't interested in a CPA license, then you would be best served by which company and job looks better on your resume. Also, make a LOT of contact while you are there for future references. Networking is very important in your early career. My advice:

Bigger is better either Fortune 500 or Big 4.. your choice really.

Good luck
I enjoyed starting with a small firm. I was able to work on a broad range of issues. Sometimes the large firms will have junior staff working on the same task for a long period, and limit their exposure to only a piece of the file. Accounting in industry might have the same result, where you will be limited to a specific function and will not be able to obtain a variety of experience.
