Advice for a managment position???

I just got a new job as a supervisor for a huge company. I will be having 15 guys ( i am a girl) reporting to me and most of them are older than i am. I dont know their job at all and i am freaking out.

Can some on give me an advice on how to act with them and some tricks as well :)

Thank you

I am an engineering manager...that being said, most of the engineers I work with are men.

I can give you some advice that I heed about my job - I hope you find it also pertains to you as well.

All my staff know more in their particular area than I do. I wasn't hired to be the expert - rather to excel at communication, facilitate teamwork, and perform administrative work (there's always that). Although I consider myself a pretty good engineer, I want them to shine in their own right - not for me to be their "project manager" and steal the spotlight. So for me, it doesn't matter that I don't know as much as they do...in my opinion, that's the way it should be. They get paid to be the experts.

Just be yourself and be honest. Give them the credit where its due. Act like you are their employee and not the other way around. Respect them and you'll get it back. Be friendly. Be down-to-earth. It's gotten me far.

Best of luck!
Alright heres some tips on what to do:

1st: DO NOT ACT BIG & IMPORTANT, this is a big mistake because one thing no one likes that from a boss & anoughter thing is because the way u desribe yourself you dont seem very intimidating so ya thats important.

2nd: Dont do #1 but also dont let them walk all over you this is also very important because they will try to take advantage so just try to act cool with them and get to know them. Also read up on your position just so you know a little more about your job.

Good luck, hope it all works out
