WHAT CAN you tell me about lawyer as a career??is good?
Answer:
I graduated last year with a communications degree that I wasn't sure I wanted to use (eg - work as a reporter, etc.). So, I decided to go to law school because I thought it would be a sure way to make decent money and have jib security. I studied for the LSAT, and did average. Eventually, I was accepted into the law school of my choice. That was several months ago. The school I chose was a private institution, and tuition was ~ $24,000/year. Plus extra for living expenses, books, and whatnot.
I attended the orientation, and the next week classes were to begin. That weekend, I began reading and briefing the cases, and before long I realized that I absolutely hated this! I had gone to law school for the wrong reasons. So I withdrew, and thankfully got my loan money refunded and canceled.
Attorneys CAN make a lot of money, but it depends on what type of law you practice and where. Attorneys work long, nasty hours. I was a runner at a firm last year, and the stress and tension at that place were palpable. These people were overworked to put it nicely. Being a lawyer is often times not about your client being right or wrong, guilty or innocent. The 'winner' of a criminal trial is often the one whose legal team puts on the best performance. The best performer sways the jury and judge often times. It can be an honorable career, but like anything else, there are some lawyers who win at any cost.
Being a lawyer is a big investment of time, and especially of money. Try to get a job at a firm as a runner and talk to those who practice. Or call up an attorney at a law office for an informational interview or job shadow. These can be helpful. You may find that you love this profession, and if so good for you. But go into it with eyes wide open. Good luck.
I wanted to go to law school after I graduated from college, and decided to work in a law firm for a while. This completely changed my mind about the profession.
I would suggest you talk to someone who practices the type of law you would like to practice, and maybe also work in a law firm for a while.
Many lawyers work a LOT of hours, and most lawyers don't have the glamourous lifestyles that are portrayed in the media. Find out everything you can before you pursue being a lawyer as a career.
If you don't mind working yourself to death, then go for it. All lawyers don't work criminal law, but pretty much all lawyers work very long weeks (60-80 hours).
