Do you think this is fair?

Here is the situation: I hurt my knee and it became swollen and filled with fluid. I called an orthopedic MD and made an appointment for Fri. @ 2:30pm. I work different shifts every day so there is no way for me to schedule something for a time when I'm not working since I don't know my schedule more than 1 week in advance. I called my work and told them about the appointment so that they would not schedule me after 2pm. I work 40 hrs every week but since I have to leave early on Friday I am only scheduled to work 36.5 hrs. I called HR to find out if I could use sick time to cover the other 3.5 hrs and explained the story to them. They said that there is no real policy on sick time, just that it is "up to the discretion of the manager." I asked the manager of my dept and she said it was ok since I never call in sick. I told the person that does payroll on Sun. about it and she said she wouldn't do it unless the store manager approved it and also that she didn't think that he would.

Answer:
First, I hope your knee is feeling better. I think you have the right reasons because you didn't know your schedule in advance, so you tried your best to not be scheduled after 2 PM. Stores should have a sick time policy and not let the manager decide, as that can make the situation difficult. I hope everything works out okay in the end.
HELL, life ain't fair!
Hmmm well unless your really hurting for the 3.5 hrs pay I would save the sick time for when you might really need it.
You could always change your appointment and call in sick on the new day and ask for your regular hours on the day you were going to take off. Next time just call in sick.
dam Wal-mart and there rules!
It seems you are jumping the gun a bit. The woman in payroll can say what she wants but until you hear from the store manager you just don't know. I have stopped believing in what I hear from people like the payroll woman, half the time they are just on a power trip and like making people squirm Next time just take the day off sick - if you don't get the time off that is.
I don't see why the store manager wouldn't approve it, but I can understand why the payroll person would want to say that--so you don't think SHE's the one not being fair to you. I'm sure she gets a lot more calls about pay she said someone would get but they didn't than about pay she said someone wouldn't get but they did!
