Is it bad to take the second day of work off?

So umm, I work in retail and my second day (my first day was a couple weeks ago for some reason) is scheduled for tomorrow and it so happens I have to attend this theater award show and it's a pretty big deal (once a year). I have a shift during those hours and I'm afraid to confront my manager about it. And I can't find anybody to cover for me. Ideas?

you should ask the manager that makes the schedule if you could speak to them. first start by saying i understand that the schedule is made in advance and i should've said this to you already, but i am unable to work on that day because i have a big awards ceremony to attend. is there any way i could work a different shift that day or the previous day instead? most managers would be fine with this, since it is only your second day you are probably not a key person in the schedule yet and were considered extra anyway. be sure to ask your manager what you should do in the future if you need a specific day or days off. how far in advance do need to ask, what happens if they can't give you the day off. by showing that you care about the job and you future with the company it is less likely that this will reflect poorly on you. good luck.

If you take it off, there is a risk you'll lose it.

Although the reality is probably not.

Once a year doesn't mean there wont be another future chance though

Well make a deciede what is more important and do it. Warn the retail bunch if you are not going in. do not tell them if you DO go in.
How long have you known you were expected to work on the day of the event? If you knew on the first day, you should have told them. And, if you found out before you posted this, you should have called your manager. The best thing now is to call your manager and tell him/her that you have a conflict on day two and would like to start again one day later. You have nothing to lose, as you seem more interested in the event than the job. If you have the event every year, just go into your job and attend the event next year - or start looking for work elsewhere.
