Court reporters make transcripts, usually of legal proceedings like depositions or trials. Machine stenography is done on a special recorder that transcribes phonemes (language sounds) as chords (several fingers move at once).

A trained court reporter can make $50 or more per hour. Training takes 2+ years. One must have patience, stamina, and perseverance to succeed at this difficult profession.
