Why do some websites "take off"?

I'm interested in learning why some websites simply boom, seemingly, overnight. How did the owners promote their site? Or is it the usual search engine optimisation stuff?

Answers:
If I knew that I would be checking my site stats from a yacht in Jamaica.
Because the fill a need that has yet to be filled.
some have large advertising budget

or a huge network of members that spread the word

about the site or a huge mailing list to spread news of the site.

The key is having a large base of members doing the work
