Do they want a fee upfront? If yes, then it's a scam, or if not totally fraudulent, you can be pretty sure that you will invest monies which you may not even recover, and it's unlikely you can make real money. Some of these companies do indeed have work for you to do. Many do not. Even those which do have work for you to do often charge you such a hefty upfront fee that you'd have to work for the next 5 years doing mailings to get back to zero.
Some widely used resources to check whether a business is a scam or not are the Better Business Bureau (www.bbb.org)and the national fraud center (www.fraud.org). These days, you can easily find out more about a company using the internet in a few minutes.
