Wow, I am surprised by the "bad" answers you see here. I thought search engine optimization process would have grown from what you see here. (Not trying to badmouth anyone here but some of the answers here would get you into hot waters)

Do not submit to search engines. It's not needed. They will find you as soon as some other websites links to you.

Copying a competitor's source code can raise a red flag with Google.

Ok . in order to be ranked higher in search engines you need to.

1. Write quality content (information) that's going to be valuable to you reader. Make sure you use keywords within your copy.

2. DO NOT SPAM. Don't try to fool search engines.

3. Submit your website to 2-4 good, quality directories. Yahoo Directory would be one of them $299 cost. Also "Best Of The Web" directory is a good choice.

4. Go read "Search engine optimization" forums. You'll get a lot of help from there.

5. Try to get other RELEVANT websites to put a link to your site.

Good luck.
regularly updated content, relevent content, links from other sites, keywords describing your website and its use, accessibility..

Those are the top ones.
This is the querry being settled by yahoo or google providers..u can t do any thing..this querry sets like this.how so long the words would be exact the search engine match those words ..and then displayed.likewise if i need firefox..if in engine i write "download firefox" due to exact words firefox will appear in 1st ten..but if i write "download browsers" then it may be possible firefox comes at hundredth..so u can not settle such querry ..it is being done by engine provider..nothing else..chaoo
Go to the page that comes top of that search, look at its source code and copy its search string and keywords into your page's source code. It may not bring you top, but it will put you in the top ten.
This is not guaranteed, however, you can do this by how your website is designed you need to have crumpet links, meta tags, keyword purchases.. I can go on and on.
First, make sure that you submit your website to the search engines. It takes anywhere from 2 weeks to even 6 months for websites to show up in the search engines. In some cases, a website will show up after 2 weeks of being online, only to disappear for maybe 3-6 months (which is called Google sandbox, though Yahoo to a certain extent also does)

With Yahoo, you can go to https://siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com/su. to submit your site for free. For guaranteed inclusion in their search engine, you have to pay and use their paid services http://search.yahoo.com/info/submit.html.

Ranking high in the search engines, however, is a tougher ballgame. Search engines look at the following factors in ranking websites, though in varying degrees of importance:

- Age = an older site stand a higher chance of getting better rankings than newer sites because they are more established (especially if considered an authority in the field) and a lot more incoming links

- Quality and Uniqueness of the Content = sites rank well if they have content that users consider relevant and original, not rehashed or using content used by hundred other websites (e.g. articles in article submission directories)

- Keyword density = number of times the keyword appears on the site. This also includes having the keywords in important places such as the title, metatags, even H1s and H2s

- How it fares in the results = when it comes up in the search engines, are people clicking on it or not. If not, search engines consider the site to be not relevant to the keyword. Also, how long does the user stay on the site; if they hit the back button immediately, then the site may not be relevant to the search term

- Site structure = on-page factors to sitemaps

- Backlinks = who are linking to the site and what are their quality (the more authoritative the site linking to your site, the better).
