Yahoo! makes most of its income from advertising. Right now, Yahoo! Answers is in the investment phase, which means that it is not making income from this service. But eventually, you can expect Yahoo! to put relevant ads on the pages the same way Google does with the Google Adwords service.
For instance, they would have their computers quickly scan this page for keywords, which may include "Yahoo!", "Google", "keywords", "advertising". Another program would then place advertisements with those keywords on this page. If you clicked on one of the pages to go to their website, they would then be charged money.
For Yahoo!, the great advantage of Yahoo! Answers is that it gets a great number of volunteers to create keyword-rich content for them, and these people do not make any money from the advertising income which eventually comes.

They aren't, directly. Indirectly, they're promoting all Yahoo stuff just by getting people to try this and make people happy with Yahoo products in general.
