Your competitor has optimized his/her site for the search engines better than your organization has. There is no way you can prevent it happening but you can get your website optimized for the search engines by professionals, that way your site would appear on top.

Are you using google? Some people use google-bombing to manipulate the results. I don't know how to prevent or change it.
Try googling the word "failure" and you will see what I mean.
It means that they've put your name in their metadata (part of the web code), and may have also paid google and other search engines to have their website and your name in their metadata also.
It's not ethical, but it is legal. You can contact the search engines and ask them to research the metadata, but if they get enough clicks they'll come up every time.
Also, try to get lots of your name and variations in your metadata (it's not only in your metadata, but how many times that is measured for search engines) , and perhaps even pay to get higher coverage, so that you'll be first on a search engine. You can also put your competitor name, so maybe when you key in their name your company will come up, too.
