What are some good cheap advertising tactics?

Answer:
Word of mouth, magnetic sign for your car, Craigslist, have business card handy etc.
Advertise on Craig's List
Craig's List

Or, post about it here, hehe.
Flyers and signs planted on the side of the road (preferably next to traffic lights).
Craig's List, local websites, local TV channels that run only ads in your area or on their own channel of area info.
YOU are the best advertising for your business. Be upbeat and tell everyone you know and everyone you meet about your business. Also every town has what is a called a penny saver publication. Its inexpensive advertising that reaches thousands of people.
Look for free banner exchange. The only downside is that you will have other people's banners on ur site
find a compny that does mailers you can hire them to send out flyers for less than it would cost to send them yourself with a .39 stamp. get a wepage 9 bucks a month tops. personally i think the best way is to get a directory and moake phone calls to businesses, but it really depends on what you are advertising for.
I would say your best bet is probably using Myspace.com its easty to customize & its good for networking.
email list to friends

direct mail (cheaper in bulk) not really cheap but effective

Local newspapers (not the daily, but the free weekly ones)

word of mouth. whatever you're selling or producing, offer discounts to existing customers for referrals
Nothing is better than word of mouth. If you have real customers who believe in what you do, they will tell a friend, and that friend will tell a friend and so on. Give an incentive for people to tell their friends. IE If you refer someone and they mention your name, you will get such and such free or you will be entered into a drawing or whatever would work best for your business.
Also, network with other businesses in the area. If you own a jewelry store, for example, make a deal with local bridal shops and limo and florist stores for special savings for the customers and employees.
Best of luck to you!
I work back in the CopyMax section of OfficeMax, so I get this all the time. Print you up some fliers on neon GREEN paper. Green is the color most people remember best and because it's neon, it'll get their attention the fastest. You can get those things for 5 cents a piece if you tell them you want the uncollated price. Get about 1000 of them and then go plaster windows, cars, poles, whatever with them. You can also get posterboard in the neon green color and put them at intersections and places like that. That's about the cheapest way to get your 'message' out to a huge audience really quickly.

I could help you out more if I knew what type of busniess you were advertising. I have yet to find Craig's list to work. Do not use MySpace unless your target market is under the age of 25. The magnetic signs on your car are a great way to be seen. Like someone mentioned, Word of mouth is the best way. I would also recommend making fliers with colorful graphics that list your information. This can be done on your home computer. Than go around the area and ask to post them in places you think your target market is. (Construction workers-Subshops, Mothers-Grocery Stores, etc.) You can also make your own business cards, Staples and Office Max sell the sheets of paper used to make them. If you are handy with a computer they can really look professional. If you offer more of a service, try a referral program. Give a percentage off to someone if they refer a friend. I hope this helps. I could come up with more ideas if I knew what your business was.

Hi, perhaps you can try Google adwords to market your service/product.

Google adwords is a text-based system for advertising on its site and its partner sites. The service allows you to create your own ads, choose keywords to help match your ads to your audience, and control the cost of your advertising—you pay only when people click on your ad (a cost per click plan). Anyone wishing to promote a product on Google can enroll in this program.

you can get a 5 detail pages information about Google adwords at :
