What is the difference between a marketing company and an advertising agency.?

Do either of these companies put together a promotion packages? Do they take care of the artwork/graphics? I have a simple product and do not know how to sell it/present it to companies. What can you expect these companies do for you? Can you pay them based on the results they get or just pay them loads of money and see if it pays off like buying a lottery ticket?

Marketing involves arranging actual sales of product or services. Advertising is about generating knowledge and interest in your product or services in the marketplace. Advertising companies will have artwork/graphic capabilities and usually work on a percentage of advertising dollars spent or on a negotiated fee. Generally, there would be no performance based payments. A marketing company will generally work on a percentage of actual sales they broker.
Advertising works out the ideas on how to sell the product and help you decide on the media and the idea/concept for the advertising like a tv advertisement, radio jingle I think.
The marketing company provides a more complete solution based on your requirements in that they can help you coordinate the advertising work that the advertising agency does, work out campaigns/approaches on how to market your brand/product to build product awareness, coordination and distribution of the media, etc. The advertising is pretty much a part of what a marketing company does. Keep in mind that you will need to research what services the marketing company can actually do for you as different groups of services offered by them may not always suit all your needs, e.g. there are the ones that deal essentially with building brand awareness through mailed brochures only, and/or ones that provide it through the web and email, and possibly the ones that provide all of these and also help you do tv and radio advertising. Be careful on what they offer and how strong they are when you choose them and pay them for this stuff as they can sometimes be strong in one area but weak in others.
Advertising just do that. Sound like you need a mkt company or consultant and no I wouldn't take business on by pay for results, epsecially if you product is new and "simple" (read unproved). Why dont you try your local printer anf get some free advice, until you have some money and then you can pay a professional to come in and help - or maybe find a similar start up who needs the business.
